Workshops

Adopt-A-Wetland and Coastal Invasives Workshop:
9:30 am – 4:00 pm

A community based volunteer monitoring program implemented through the University of Georgia, the Adopt-A-Wetland (AAW) program educates coastal communities about coastal wetlands, water quality, and invasive species. Participants in this day long workshop will be trained in chemical and biological monitoring techniques for saltwater marshes while learning to identify local invasive species and learning about the ecological and economical problems that accompany such species. Bring your boots and prepare to get dirty! Participants will receive an AAW Curriculum Guide, AAW Manual and invasive species literature. Cost: $50.00 per person.

Gyotaku with Charles Maley:     9:30 am – 2:00 pm
Learn the art of Japanese fish printing with Georgia Artist Charles Maley. This workshop will take place at the UGA Marine Extension Service on Skidaway Island. Cost: $55.00 per person.

Phytoplankton Monitoring Network Workshop:     9:30 am – 4:00 pm
Workshop participants will join scientists from the North Inlet-Winyah Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve and NOAA's Phytoplankton Monitoring Network for a day of plankton exploration at the University of Georgia's Marine Education Center and Aquarium on Skidaway Island. They will collect plankton samples along a dock and bring them into the lab to observe the microscopic world of plankton under scopes. Get your hands wet while exploring the diversity of zooplankton and phytoplankton of the southeast US, and leave with ideas of how to implement plankton studies into your curriculum or programs. Participants will receive a CD with plankton lesson plans and a copy of the CD Phytopia. Cost: $25.00 per person.
